Home faces serious damage after tree falls in Saturday evening storm

A Manor Park home is in need of serious repair after a tree fell and broke through the structure during a severe thunderstorm Saturday.

Around 7 p.m., Ottawa Fire Services received a call from a resident who reported a large tree in their front yard had fallen through a wall of their home. Upon arrival it was confirmed that two trees had fallen on the street. One caused severe damage to the two-storey single-family home in the 0-100 block of Farnham Crescent.

The tree destroyed the front entrance to the home, so firefighters reportedly entered from the rear to check on the family and confirm there were no injuries.

During an assessment, firefighters confirmed there was a one by four foot hole on the second storey in one of the front bedroom walls. No broken roof joints were found in the attic and the Captain on Scene and the Structural Collapse Team confirmed there was no risk of collapse.

Firefighters used an aerial ladder ad chainsaws to remove parts of the tree and install tarps to cover the hole to prevent water damage to the home. The trees on the road were also removed prior to clearing the scene.

First responders say the family did not require Victim Assistance but will be displaced due to the damage.
