Over 50 charges laid in human trafficking case after more victims came forward

More charges were laid in a human trafficking investigation after Ottawa police identified more victims.

In March, police charged Anthony Badibanga-Mukendi, 27, with several offences related to a human trafficking investigation. He appeared in court and was placed into custody on March 14.

Officials said at the time, victims may not be familiar with the legal name of their offender. He is alleged to have used the aliases Marty, Anton and Tony. They are also adding on the names of Jay, Tighten Tones and Tones.

At the time, police said they believed there were more victims. Now over a month later, they said more people have come forward aiding police in laying more charges against Badibanga-Mukendi. However, officers say there could be even more people who have yet to speak with police.

“Additionally, investigators have determined that Mr. Badibanga-Mukendi has travelled across Canada and has allegedly been involved in human trafficking for several years,” the press release reads.

Police said they laid more than just human trafficking charges against the accused, who is alleged to have perpetrated acts of intimate partner violence, fraud and other criminal offences.

Officials say they “respect” victims’ decisions to pursue criminal charges, and that reporting the incidents is “crucial in helping investigators identify suspects and track crime trends.”
