Special air quality statement for Ottawa area lifted

The Environment Canada special air quality statement for the Ottawa area has ended after a change in wind direction has given much of southern Ontario some reprieve from wildfire smoke.

The special air quality statement was issued on June 5 as those in the city could begin to see the haziness clouding the sky. By Friday afternoon, the city’s air quality was rated 10+ or “very high risk.”

With the forecast of some south easterly winds, meteorologists are predicting much of the smoke will be pushed back in the direction of where the fires are burning.

The statement was lifted Sunday morning with Environment Canada rating the city’s air quality at a three, which is considered low risk. The afternoon may see that number reach a four, but Environment Canada says there is still no need to reschedule outdoor activities unless you are experiencing symptoms.

Rain in the forecast could also help to clear out the air. On Monday there is a 30 per cent chance of showers. On Tuesday that chance increases to 40 per cent.
