Man arrested in ByWard Market with a gun

Police officers patrolling the downtown core arrested a man after he was holding a gun and making “concerning statements.”

Officials said it happened early Friday, around 2:00 a.m., in an area that was not related to an investigation some officers were participating in.

They were called to a part of the ByWard Market where police saw the man holding a firearm. When he saw officers he tried to leave the area, but police were successful in arresting him.

The gun was recovered in the situation.

Ottawa police for the last several summers have increased patrols in the downtown core in order to “maintain social order” they have previously said.

Proactive patrols will be conducted in these areas by frontline officers and members of the Neighbourhood Resource Team. Partners from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, OC Transpo and the City of Ottawa’s By-law and Regulatory Services will also assist in these patrols.

Recently, the enforcement resulted in multiple arrests and people facing charges.
