18-year-old dies after being pulled from Rideau River

Firefighters were called on Monday to a portion of the Rideau River where they pulled a teen from the waterway.

It happened around 9:21 p.m. with a 911 caller saying three teens “went swimming” near Walton Upton-Collins Park in Manotick. The caller told crews that only two people came out of the water.

The initial reports were that the third person, an 18-year-old, had “began to struggle and went under,” a press release from police reads. It is reported he was under the water for five minutes and had not resurfaced.

Ottawa fire’s water rescue team was dispatched. A rescue boat was launched quickly, and a grid search was initiated. By 9:45 p.m., crews found the teen underwater and lifted him on board, immediately starting CPR.

Once on shore, two firefighters continued resuscitation efforts while paramedics put the teen in the ambulance.

Paramedics said that he was in a critical, life-threatening condition. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“We are grateful to the nearby residents who stepped in to assist first responders during efforts to save the teen,” police said. “Our thoughts are with the young man’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”

Firefighters left the scene by 10:43 p.m.
