Environment Canada warns of prolonged heat for the next week

Canada’s weather agency is preparing people for what it calls a “prolonged period of near heat warning levels” for the next week.

According to the forecast from Environment Canada, daytime highs will be consistently reaching 29 to 32 C over the next seven days, but it could feel as hot as 35 to 40 with the humidex. Another reason the government body is issuing the warning is that there will be little relief for people since the lows are expected to be between 19 to 23 C overnight.

The heat is starting on Friday, with temperatures reaching 30 C, with the humidity it is believed to feel around 36. Overnight, the forecast shows showers are possible with a risk of a thunderstorm, but the low will only drop to around 18 C.

Over the next week, until July 17, temperatures will be in the 30s. Saturday, Environment Canada notes it could feel like 40 with the humidex factored in. The agency says its data indicates this should be the hottest it will get.

“A shift in the weather pattern on Thursday will likely end this multi-day period of heat and humidity,” the warning reads.

In issuing this statement, the agency hopes people will be able to prepare and protect themselves, noting that extreme heat can impact everyone. It encourages people to check on older adults living alone who are at risk of heat illness. That includes nausea, dizziness, dark urine and intense fatigue.

For those with air conditioning, the agency says people should turn it on or use a fan to move the air through the unit. If the living space is too hot, it says people should move to a public cooling space.
