A local chip stand in Ottawa’s south end was the scene of a late-night fire, officials said.
Firefighters were called to Al’s Drive-In in Osgoode at 10:25 p.m. on July 29. A caller told crews they were seeing thick grey smoke and the smell of burning plastic coming from the stand in the 5400 block of Osgoode Main Street.
Officials said when their teams arrived on scene they could see flames coming from the small building. Crews launched “an aggressive attack” and evacuated people from the nearby home. They quickly worked to remove propane tanks from the area before they caught.
Firefighters also confirmed no one was inside the stand at the time.
Sections of the walls were removed to douse flames with the blaze under control just after midnight. The home did not sustain any damage.
According to posts on social media the chip stand opened in early May.
