Crews called to basement fire in east Ottawa

Firefighters responded to the report of a blaze as black smoked wafted from a townhome in the eastern part of Ottawa.

The incident happened Aug. 17 around 10:17 p.m. A caller described smoke coming from the basement of a house in the 700 block of Cummings Avenue, in the community of Forbes, between Vanier and Gloucester.

Once on scene, crews said that there was smoke at the front door and black smoke coming from the back of the building, going up to the second floor. Declaring a working fire allowed more resources to the scene at 10:21 a.m.

Another team started searching the home and didn’t find anyone inside.

After dousing flames, crews were able to extinguish the fire by 10:40 a.m.

An investigator was sent to the scene to figure out how this happened.
