Man arrested following two week search in serious assault case

A 28-year-old male has been arrested and charged following an alleged armed sexual assault in Renfrew.
Officials said that on Aug. 28, a woman went to a local hospital and reported she had been held against her will and sexually assaulted at a motel on Stewart Street. She said the man was known to her. Police also believed the man was in possession of a hand gun.
The suspect had already left the motel but police located and attempted to arrest him in town before he fled on to the Algonquin Trail. The Renfrew Detachment of the OPP, the OPP Emergency Response Team, the Canine Unit and the Tactics and Rescue Unit were involved in the search.
A shelter in place was initiated for approximately four hours before police determined the suspect had left the area.
On Sept. 9, a 28-year-old male was located and arrested by Ottawa Police and was transported to the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke.
He has now been charged with the following:
- Assault;
- Assault with a weapon;
- Sexual assault;
- Forcible confinement;
- Overcoming resistance by attempting to choke, suffocate or strangle;
- Pointing a firearm;
- Two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm;
- Criminal harassment – threatening conduct;
- Intimidation;
- Intimidation – uses threats of violence;
- Mischief;
- Obstruct a peace officer; and
- Two counts of fail to comply with a release order.
The identity of the accused cannot be released in order to protect the identity of the victim.
He remains in custody with a bail hearing scheduled for Sept. 26.
