Trees, a fence and a deck were covered in flames on Sunday afternoon, according to firefighters, who responded to the blaze in a south Ottawa community.
It happened around 3:33 p.m. after multiple 911 calls reported smoke and flames coming from the backyard of a single-family home. They told crews that trees, a deck and a fence were on fire and the flames were spreading toward the home.
Officials were sent to the 2600 block of Bowen Street in Osgoode to knock down the fire. They confirmed on scene that the backyard was fully engulfed and flames had spread towards the back of the house. Initiating a fast-attack, firefighters use multiple hose lines toward the flames while another team began searching the home for people.
There were several hazards on scene for teams as they battled the fire, including live hydro wires hanging over the backyard and propane tanks.
The flames quickly spread up the siding to the eavestrough at the back of the home. Firefighters said they were able to stop it from advancing further through the house. Flames “slightly” breached the kitchen, Nick DeFazio, public information officer with Ottawa fire, said in a release.
Teams had to pull down some portions of the ceiling in the kitchen and use a thermal imaging camera to check for hot spots.
By 4:32 p.m., two searches confirmed no one was inside, and the fire was under control.
