Human remains confirmed to be missing Smiths Falls man

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have located human remains as part of an ongoing investigation near Smiths Falls.

The identity of the remains are confirmed to be those of Robbie Thomson as of Nov. 5.

He was reported missing in October 2023. Before the remains were found, police said they had evidence to believe Thomson was the victim of a homicide.

On Oct. 29, police carried out the arrests of three people: Christopher Fenton, 48, Erin Mackie, 40, both from Montague Township and Joshua Belfiori, 34, from Kingston.

Each has been charged with one count of first-degree murder.

The accused individuals remain in custody following a bail hearing.

On Oct. 30, officers executing a search warrant at a residence on Kelly Jordan Road located human remains on the property. Police say a postmortem examination will be required to confirm the identity of the remains, as well as the cause of death.

Residents of Kelly Jordan Road, northeast of Smiths Falls, will continue to see a large police presence as part of the investigation but say there is no risk to public safety.

The Lanark County OPP, in collaboration with the Smiths Falls Police Service, continues to investigate under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch. The Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, with support from OPP Forensic Identification Services are also involved.
