Motorcyclist caught going more than double the speed limit

Stunt and careless driving charges were laid against a driver who was seen travelling at a high-rate of speed on an Ottawa roadway.

According to Ottawa police’s traffic escort and enforcement unit, officers clocked a motorcyclist speeding at 200 km/h down a stretch of Limebank Road, which is more than double the 80 km/h limit.

The incident happened in the afternoon of Nov. 2. Police said after the motorcyclist weaved his way up to Riverside Drive and Hog’s Back Road, an Ottawa police officer was able to intervene.

Officials said the 58-year-old man is facing a stunt driving charge and a careless driving offence.

Police could have laid a Criminal Code charge

Following an undercover provincial police blitz that saw dozens of charges laid and several motorcycles seized, the Crown in Ottawa and police reached an agreement in September.

Police have consulted the Crown in Ottawa and agreed that, any speeds over 180 km/h, officers can lay a dangerous driving charge.

This is one tactic police are trying in order to curb the number of high-profile speeding incidents in the nation’s capital.

“We’re trying to get the message out to people that you’re not facing just highway traffic charges, but you could now be facing a criminal code charge,” Constable Michael Fathi told CityNews at the time.
