Thousands of cannabis plants, 53 charges and 24 people in custody after Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) busted an illegal cannabis production operation near Belleville, Ont.
According to officials, the enforcement efforts took place between Oct. 1 to 7 in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. The investigation and seizure of millions of dollars’ worth of dried plants involved non-Indigenous organized criminal networks, the press release states.
Four illegal production sites were dismantled in September, and officers seized 72,000 plants. A further six locations were searched the first week in October, with help from 12 OPP units, border patrol officials and Tyendinaga Police Service. Ottawa police supported the operation using its air unit.
As a result, police said that the plants taken from the area have a value of more than $79 million. Among the plants, four pounds of cannabis, a quantity of THC extract and 3.7 million contraband cigarettes and 35,600 kg of tobacco (valued at $9.8 million) and equipment were taken.

“We are grateful for the continued patience and support of our community as this investigation continued. The second phase of enforcement has concluded, further exposing the extent to which non-community members have exploited our land for profit,” Acting Sergeant Chris Brinklow, of Tyendinaga Police Service said in the press release.
As part of the case, police found illegal dumping sites in the Bay of Quinte. A local quarry was “depleted,” police discovered. This resulted in impacts to the water table in the area.
“A total of 19 non-community members have been charged. These operations have enriched organized crime while offering no benefit to our people,” Brinklow said.
