LRT slower from Rideau to UOttawa due to damaged overhead support

A defect was found in part of the support system on O-Train Line 1 between Rideau and UOttawa stations, forcing officials to close one track.

According to a memo from Troy Charter, interim general manager of transit services, the damaged support to the overhead catenary system was found around 8:00 a.m. on Thursday. The insulators, part of the overall structure was damaged, the service said in an email. It needs to be replaced before trains can travel through the area again.

Further details from the transit service note that an electric rail operator found the issue during the morning commute. It’s unclear how the piece was damaged but an investigation has been launched, the email to CityNews reads.

As a result, passengers can expect slower trains for the afternoon commute on Nov. 20. One track between Rideau and UOttawa is not in use, and the trains are only available on the westbound platform at Rideau and Parliament.

“Some customers may encounter increased travel times as trains are operating approximately every 7 minutes,” OC Transpo said. “As trains are only able to operate on one track in this section, the level of impact can change based on passenger volumes and platform activity, however, service remains frequent.”

Service is operating as normal at other stations on the line.

Workers will repair the piece overnight after the last train runs through, and the city believes the system will reopen at full capacity on Friday morning.
