Ottawa firefighters were called to help a driver after a car slid off the roadway, trapping them inside.
It happened on a slippery, wet travel day in the nation’s capital, just as the city is bracing for 15 to 20 centimetres of snow by Wednesday evening. Ottawa police called firefighters from the south end of the city around 11:37 a.m.
Crews were sent to the 7300 block of Snake Island Road. They found a vehicle that had left the roadway and was “lodged in the ditch.” The only occupant was trapped with multiple injuries, firefighters said.
The front end of the car was significantly damaged, so teams started stabilizing the car before the extrication process.
Using specialized tools, firefighters removed the driver’s side door and passenger door, and the post in between the two.
By 12:33 p.m., the person was removed from the vehicle on a backboard.
“Today’s heavy snowfall is creating extremely hazardous driving conditions across Ottawa,” a press release from firefighters reads.
