Driver seriously injured after tire comes loose striking windshield

Provincial police are issuing a warning after a person was seriously injured on Highway 417 due to a loose tire.

Officials said on May 8, they responded to the highway after reports noted that a tire came off a vehicle travelling eastbound and struck a vehicle travelling westbound.

According to police, the driver whose vehicle was struck suffered “significant” injuries and was transported to hospital. A photo from the scene shows the front windshield of the car severely damaged.

Police are hoping that this serves as a reminder for people to double-torque their tires when changing them.

The owner of the tire was charged under the Highway Traffic Act.

In the spring, it is not uncommon for incidents like these to happen, but police continue to try to combat the possibility.

Last year, a woman and her baby were lucky after one of the vehicle’s tires fell off on Highway 417. The driver told police she had just gotten her summer tires put on.

“A wheel coming off at those speeds can be a danger to both the person driving the car and anyone the tire might hit,” police said.
