Woman safely released after 14 hour hostage situation in west end community

An hours-long hostage-taking incident in the South March neighbourhood has been safely resolved.

Ottawa police were called to a residence on Finlayson Crescent on Thursday morning over concerns for the safety of a woman who was believed being held against her will.

Officers established a secure perimeter around the home and began negotiating to try to peacefully resolve the situation.

After more than 14-hours of negotiation, a tactical unit entered the residence around 9 p.m. and rescued the woman, who was not physically harmed in the incident.

A man was taken into custody and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

There was no immediate word on how the suspect sustained his injuries, but police said the province’s Special Investigations Unit has been notified “in accordance with standard procedure when a police firearm is discharged.”

Police say the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
