Harper government’s anti-prostitution law one step from becoming law

OTTAWA – The Harper government’s anti-prostitution law is just one step away from becoming law.
The legislation only needs royal assent after it was given third reading by the Senate.
The government says the bill would protect sex workers by giving them access to bodyguards and the ability to work indoors.
The government wants the bill to become law by next month.
That’s the deadline imposed late last year by the Supreme Court of Canada when it struck down the existing anti-prostitution laws as unconstitutional.
At that time, the high court ruled the existing laws create a dangerous environment for sex workers and hinders their ability to protect themselves.
The Sex Professionals of Canada says the new laws won’t improve things, and will ensure violence against Canadian sex workers will continue.
