Fire at abandoned factory in Gatineau being investigated as arson

GATINEAU – A fire at an abandoned window and door factory in Gatineau is now being investigated as arson.

Gatineau Fire officials say a 911 call came in around 6:15 p.m. Saturday, as 40-foot flames could be seen at the back of the building on Rue Desrosiers.

Firefighters took a defensive approach to the blaze due to the factory’s structural instability and scale of the rapidly growing fire.

No surrounding property was damaged, but officials say the shuttered building is a complete write-off.

Damage is pegged at $1.7 million.

Crews were still cutting through debris and dousing hot spots as of 3 a.m. Sunday.

No injuries are being reported in the incident. A cause has yet to be determined.
