Woman charged in ongoing Ottawa human trafficking investigation

By Mike Vlasveld

The Ottawa Police Service Human Trafficking Unit is charging an Ottawa woman, as part of a recent investigation involving accused, Miguel Ortiz.

Daphne Graham, 23, is facing the following charges:

– Personation to gain advantage
– Obstruct Justice
– Forcible confinement

She is scheduled to appear in court Friday.

The Human Trafficking Unit strongly believes there could be more victims in connection to Miguel Ortiz, who is also known as 'Angel' and 'Diablo.'

“This investigation demonstrates how manipulative traffickers can be,” said Sgt. Damien Laflamme. “Intimidation is a tool very commonly used and traffickers stop at nothing to coerce and deceive survivors for their personal and financial gains.”

“Human trafficking offences are about personal control over vulnerable people and this investigation is a prime example of this,” the sergeant noted. “We understand the reluctance of survivors wanting to come forward with information. The Ottawa Police [Service] will continue to put survivors and their needs first and foremost.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Ottawa Police Human Trafficking Unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5005. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or by downloading the Ottawa Police app.
