The National Capital Commission (NCC) says it's developing a pilot project to close parts of Queen Elizabeth Driveway to vehicular traffic, to allow greater physical distancing for local residents living in denser areas.
It said late Tuesday that it's been working with stakeholders and partners to ensure coordination and expects to announce more details soon.
Meanwhile, Ottawa residents can soon expect to have a little more space to walk over the Bank Street Bridge.
Capital Ward City Councillor Shawn Menard says the outer lanes of the bridge over the Rideau Canal will be reserved for active transportation,
“The two inside lanes wll be reserved for regular vehicular traffic and buses. We're hoping to get this done very soon — within the next week.”
The NCC is not considering roadway closures for either the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway or the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway, due to advice from public health agencies, logistical challenges, staffing requirements and the need to ensure continued access for transit and emergency services.
Based on ongoing public health advice and in consultation with partner municipalities, the NCC says it will reassess options for road closures, including Sunday Bikedays.
