City of Ottawa staff don’t like plan for development on Kanata Lakes Golf Club land

By Alex Goudge

City of Ottawa staff members have released a report recommending the rejection of a proposal for development at the Kanata Lakes Golf Club, citing numerous issues with the plan.

According to the proposal filed by Clublink Corporation LLC, the redevelopment will build 1,500 houses on about half the land, and covert 20 per cent of the area into roads.

City staff feel the application contains multiple unanswered questions, does not conform with the aesthetic of the area, and is inconsistent with both municipal and provincial growth strategies.

In the meantime, a six-week hearing is also scheduled in January 2022 at the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal (LPAT) to fight a more-than-30-year-old agreement between the original course owners and the former City of Kanata, if no resolution is achieved before that.

The City of Kanata and Campeau Corporation signed an agreement in 1981 that calls for 40 per cent of land in Kanata Lakes to remain greenspace, which is largely achieved through the presence of the golf course.

The report from city staff will be voted on by the city's Planning Committee on November 26.
