Ottawa Valley Meats partners with local farmers to expand business

A local meat delivery company is expanding to better serve the Ottawa area.

During the pandemic, many people have turned to online shopping and grocery orders, and Ottawa Valley Meats says it's adjusted to that growing trend.

Most recent, the company partnered with several local farmers to buy a processing plant, which happened to be the last commercial-sized plant in the capital area. Tom Henderson's was scheduled to close, as management decided to retire after 40 years in business, and now local farmers are happy that they still have a plant to process their livestock.

“Without a local abattoir, raising beef may not have been viable for us, or many other farmers in the area,” said Eric Patenaude, a beef farmer in Embrun.

The CEO of Ottawa Valley Meats, Darius Campeau says the plant will be expanded to offer more products and it will also create more jobs for Ottawans.

“Abattoirs are a critical link in the food supply chain, in a worrying trend, many have closed their doors over the past decade… Without knowing where your meat is being processed, there is no guarantee on its origin,” explains Campeau.

Ottawa Valley Meats serves over 20,000 families a year with their meat delivery service.
