Ottawa firefighters spend two hours battling large structure fire in Stittsville

Ottawa firefighters dealt with multiple hazards while battling a large structure fire in Stittsville Monday afternoon.

At approximately 2:45 p.m., the Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) communications division received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a single-family home fully engulfed in smoke and flames in the 0-100 block of Poplarwood Avenue.

Due to the number of 9-1-1 calls and the amount of visible smoke that could seen from afar, a working fire was declared while crews were on route.

The first OFS vehicle arrived within four minutes of being dispatched and confirmed the heavy smoke and flames coming from the home.

Firefighters had to deal with multiple hazards on scene, including live hydro wires and propane tanks along one of the walls of the home.

A water shuttle system also had to be set up because the home is located in an area without hydrants and it took nearly two hours to bring the fire under control.

An fire investigator was dispatched to the scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire and victims services was requested for one adult.
