A climate protestor has been arrested after smearing paint on artwork at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.

The protestor, Kaleb Suedfeld with the group On2Ottawa, smeared pink paint on a Tom Thomson’s ‘Norther River’ piece hanging in the National Art Gallery of Canada over the noon hour on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) said the man will be charged with mischief, but more charges could be coming.

Supporters of On2Ottawa are demanding the federal government pass appropriate legislation to implement a National Fire-Fighting Agency with 50,000 professional firefighters to tackle Canada’s wildfires.

The group has been behind some of the recent traffic disruption across the city over the past week and will be continuing its demonstrations at different locations in Ottawa over the next few weeks.

A spokesperson with the group said to CityNews Ottawa that the paint used is children’s paint and is washable as the painting is under glass.
