SIU investigating early morning death in Ottawa’s west end

By CityNews Ottawa staff

Ontario’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate the death of a man found at a west-end Ottawa apartment building.

Police were called around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 12 to an apartment building on McEwen Avenue, near Richmond Road and the Kichi Zibi Mikan Parkway. Police described the call as being about “an unwanted man.”

Officers said they found a man in medical distress, and called paramedics. Paramedics took the man to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination of the man is scheduled for Wednesday.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is now probing the man’s death. The SIU investigates whenever a civilian dies or is seriously injured during an interaction with the police, as well as when an officer discharges their weapon or a civilian accuses police of sexual assault.
