1 person dead after wrong way, head-on crash on Hwy. 401 near Kingston

One person is dead following a wrong way, head-on crash on Highway 401 just west of Kingston.

Around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, the Frontenac Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of an SUV travelling west in the eastbound lanes of the highway.

A short time later, two SUVs crashed.

All eastbound lanes were blocked while the drivers from each vehicle and a child were extricated from the wreckage.

Both drivers and the child were transported to hospital. An update from police says the one driver does not have life-threatening injuries.

A 41-year-old woman, who was driving the wrong way vehicle, has since died.

CityNews contacted OPP about the child and their injuries.

Frontenac OPP were assisted by members of the Lennox & Addington OPP detachment, Kingston Fire Rescue, Frontenac Paramedics, the Kingston Police Service and the Ministry of Transportation.

The highway was closed for eight hours for the investigation, reopening around 9 p.m.

No charges have been laid at this point and the investigation is ongoing.
