Heat grips Ottawa, most of southern Ontario over next few days

High heat and extreme humidity continue to dominate in the nation’s capital this week, as yet another multi-day period of high temperatures is being felt.

Environment Canada is warning that temperatures will be between 30 and 33 C, with the humidex, it is expected to feel closer to 38 and 42. The hottest day, the weather agency said, is anticipated on Monday, with Ottawa expected to reach a high of 33 C with a humidex of 41.

There is a bit of relief on the horizon.

“Daytime high temperatures are expected to lower on Wednesday, bringing an end to the heat event,” a statement from Environment Canada notes.

Until then, Tuesday is also going to be a hot one. The forecast shows a mix of sun and cloud will start off the day, before it continues to heat up. Temperatures should be around 31 C, feeling like 37.

Nighttime lows over the next two days won’t be providing much relief, the weather agency said, with temperatures hovering between 19 and 21 C.

“Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion,” it notes.

It’s not just the nation’s capital fighting the muggy weather; most of the southern half of the province is blanketed in similar high heat this week. Environment Canada is noting that from Windsor to the Ottawa Valley, heat is dominating both Monday and Tuesday.

A portion of communities around Sudbury and North Bay, Ont., are under a similar weather dome.
