Provincial Offences Act charges laid against novice drivers have seen a stark 81 per cent increase over 2024, Ottawa OPP say.
Between Jan. 1 and Aug. 31 last year, police laid 1,305 charges. In the same time frame this year, 2,376 charges were handed down.
This includes charges for G1, G2, M1 and M2 drivers.
OPP say the number of speeding charges has increased a modest 2 per cent. But other more serious offences, like stunt driving and distracted driving, are on the rise.
These serious charges carry with them increased consequences for novice drivers. Those penalties include longer suspensions upon conviction. Some may even be required to restart the Graduated Licencing program.
As insurance rates are already higher for young drivers, these charges can have serious financial effects.
“The OPP reminds motorists that having a driver’s licence is a privilege, not a right,” a spokesperson said in a media release. “Together, we can make the changes necessary to ensure that Ontario roads are safe for all drivers.”
