Black smoke seen from residential building prompts firefighter response

A caller to Ottawa’s firefighters described seeing black smoke pouring from a downtown building early evening on Wednesday.

According to a release from crews, the call came in at 7:28 p.m. and the person said they could see smoke on the third floor of a multi-unit residential building. Firefighters were sent to the 200 block of Dalhousie Street in the Lowertown community.

When they arrived, they found black smoke and flames on the third floor. Declaring a “working fire” by 7:34 p.m. adding extra resources.

Firefighters advanced into the low-rise building with a hose, while another team searched the building for people.

After two searches no one was inside, and crews were able to contain and douse flames by 8:10 p.m.

A fire investigator was dispatched to the scene while crews ventilated smoke out of the units.
