Vehicle caught going more than double the speed limit on Hwy. 401

Police pulled two stunt drivers off the road in eastern Ontario after two vehicles were caught going well above the speed limit.

According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), they detected an orange car flying down Highway 401 near Morrisburg. They clocked it speeding at 239 km/h in a posted 110 km/h.

The OPP officer who pulled over the vehicle was told by the driver that they were in a hurry to get home and “regretted speeding.” They were charged with stunt driving with an immediate 14-day vehicle impound. Their licence was suspended for 30 days in Ontario, as the driver lives in Nova Scotia.

The same day, police also pulled over a pick-up truck in the same area.

The driver was caught going 156 km/h and is facing the same stunt driving penalty.

Ottawa OPP issuing stricter charges

There have been several instances of drivers travelling on Ottawa roadways above the threshold for stunt driving charges. In some situations, police are catching the same drivers for speeds double the limit.

Because of this, OPP Constable Michael Fathi said police have consulted the Crown in Ottawa and agreed that any speeds over 180 km/h, officers can lay a dangerous driving charge.

“We’re trying to get the message out to people that you’re not facing just highway traffic charges, but you could now be facing a criminal code charge,” he said.
