Driver caught going 205 km/h on Ottawa highway over long weekend

A 20-year-old man is facing consequences after police caught him flying down Highway 417 at the end of the long weekend.

According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) the vehicle was clocked travelling at 205 km/h, an immediate stunt driving charge. The male driver also had a passenger in the vehicle.

This highlighted as an example of what police found over the busy long weekend, which had officers lay hundreds of charges over three days and saw many suspensions, impoundments and arrests.

Officials said in an update that the total number was more than 1,500 charges across all OPP-patrolled roads and highways in eastern Ontario.

The highest number of offences was for speeding, the press release shows, followed by seatbelt violations and lack of proper insurance.

  • Speeding – 893
  • Seatbelt violations – 92
  • Failing to have proper insurance – 83
  • Stunt driving – 42
  • Impaired driving – 36
  • Alcohol or cannabis accessible to the driver – 13
  • Distracted driving – 5

“Speeding is one of the top contributing factors in fatal collisions and is 100% preventable,” Acting Superintendent Stephan Neufeld, OPP East Region, said. “Our members also continue to see many drivers who have no car insurance. This is a major concern as insurance is there to help you and others in the event of a serious collision.” –

On top of the roads, police patrolled lakes and rivers, enforcing and laying a total of 19 charges against boat operators. The majority were related to a lack of life jackets or other safety concerns.
