A rural west Ottawa roadway was closed for more than six hours after a serious collision sent two people to hospital and one via air ambulance.
Around 1:57 p.m., Ottawa fire received a call from police for help extricating a man from a pick up truck. The crash happened at the intersection of Flewellyn and Ormrod roads, which is near the community of Ashton and bends to meet another street.
When crews arrived, they found one of the vehicles lying in the ditch, and a utility trailer it was towing had been jackknifed and was facing the opposite direction while resting against the truck.
Two off-duty Ottawa firefighters were already there, giving first aid to the trapped man in his 60s inside the vehicle.
The driver and passenger in the SUV, a woman in her 30s and a man in his 70s, were both out of their vehicle and were being treated by paramedics. The woman was in serious but stable condition. The man was airlifted to hospital in serious but stable condition.
Firefighters quickly stabilized the truck in the ditch and, using specialized tools, removed the roof. When they could see the man more clearly, they saw that his legs were pinned under the steering wheel. Using hydraulic tools, the team lifted the dashboard.

By 2:45 p.m., the driver’s seatbelt was cut, and he was placed onto a backboard from the ditch to the road. His injuries were serious; he had broken bones so badly that they were sticking out from his skin. This required firefighters to apply a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.
He was sent to hospital in serious but stable condition.
Fire crews left the scene around 3:30 p.m., but Ottawa police closed Flewellyn Road well into the evening.
In total, three ambulances from Lanark, one from Ottawa and two superintendents arrived at the crash scene, Nicolas Guertin, acting superintendent of Ottawa paramedic communications, told CityNews in an email.
