The internet has gotten its very own red light district. After years of discussion and debate, the organization that oversees the internet’s naming system has approved the creation of the “.xxx” domain category, joining “.com”, “.org.” and others in the pantheon of internet suffixes.
Oddly enough, the decision by the internet corporation for assigned names and numbers unites two groups who otherwise would oppose each other in fighting against the decision. Religious groups argue that giving adult websites their own corner of the internet has legitimized the content. And pornographers worry that the .xxx designation will ghettoize their sites.
As for now, the use of the suffix is meant to be voluntary. But those who have produced pornographic sites have feared governments could try to mandate the domain’s use, so pornographic content is more easily blocked.
