Lions host Saskatchewan in preseason finale

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC Lions are home tonight meeting the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Empire Field  to complete the Canadian Football League preseason.

This is the last chance for players fighting for spots on the roster to impress the coaching staff, as the roster will be reduced to opening day numbers by Thursday or Friday.

Saskatchewan and B.C. both won their exhibition openers. The Riders edged  Edmonton by a point, while B.C. blanked Calgary 24-0.

One of the battles will be for the Lions’ third-string quarterback job between former Seattle Seahawk camper Mike Reilly and former Arkansas State star Corey Leonard. Lions coach and general manager Wally Buono is expected to give starter Travis Lulay a little more time than he was given in the win over Calgary.

The Lions don’t have many open spots but there are battles for jobs on both offense and defense. Buono will use tonight’s game to cut the roster to 46 players. The Roughriders are expected to start veteran Darian Durant as quarterback but it is unclear how long he’ll stay in the game. Durant was a spectator for their win over Edmonton.

Tonight’s kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. The Lions will open the 2011 CFL regular season in Montreal next Thursday.
