The Aboriginal People’s Television Network said Ottawa is moving to cut off specific land claims negotiations. A-P-T-N quotes First Nations negotiators as saying they’ve been told of the move by federal counterparts. One lawyer working for a firm representing several Indian bands told A-P-T-N that October 16th been set as a deadline for negotiations.
Alan Pratt said on that date, all previous offers made at the table by federal officials will be formally revoked. A-P-T-N stated it had learned that if a First Nation rejects Ottawa’s final offer, the only recourse will be to take the claim to the Specific Claims Tribunal.
That tribunal cannot award more than a total of 250 million dollars each year for all the claims it hears, and is to be phased out after ten years.
