Boaters safe after fire on Ottawa River

By Mike Vlasveld

Three boaters are doing okay after their vessel caught fire along the Ottawa River, in the area of the Rideau Falls.

Ottawa Fire Services received multiple 911 calls, just after 2 p.m., Monday.

Heavy black smoke was billowing from the boat and that there were people in the water being assisted by fellow boaters.

The first arriving District Chief confirmed that three people who were in the water were safely aboard other boats and were being transported for assessment to Gatineau firefighters on the Quebec side of the river.

The boat fire was suppressed by Ottawa Fire Services water rescue technicians who were still at the scene as of 4 p.m.

OFS is reminding boaters to always wear a personal floatation device and ensure it fits snug and securely. Also ensure you are equipped with a safety kit when heading out on the water and/or outdoor adventures.
