Carol Anne Meehan not seeking re-election in Gloucester South-Nepean

By Alex Black

Carol Anne Meehan says she is not running for re-election in this fall's municipal election.

In a written statement , the Gloucester South-Nepean councillor says her youngest child is heading off to university in the fall, and she is now in a stage of her life where it's possible to tackle different pursuits and check items off her bucket list.

She adds that the last four years have been a privilege to represent one of Ottawa's most diverse and fast-growing areas.

“It was interesting, rewarding, and challenging, and I have enjoyed advocating for and being an independent and vocal voice around the Council table,” Meehan writes. “Ottawa is on the cusp of an exciting new chapter. Next term there will be a new mayor and many new councillors and I am confident those who are making the tough decision to seek election have the best interests of their communities in mind. I wish them all well.”

She adds that four years in political life is both a long time and a short time, and that the term was often defined by the pandemic, and that the restrictions placed on community activities and social gatherings took its toll.

“Still, I will look back at my time on city council with pride at what I accomplished, and that I had the strength and conviction to be the strongest, vocal advocate that I could be for the residents of ward 22.”

Meehan tells The Rob Snow Show on Monday, July 25 that despite the challenges of being part of council, she doesn't regret taking the leap after many years in the field of journalism.

“It was a learning experience, and I got to help a lot of people just like me,” she said.

Municipal election day is October 24, 2022.
