Ciena closes Kanata office after employee tests positive for COVID-19

By Jason White

A tech company has temporarily closed its Kanata offices and has directed employees to work from home, after one of its employees tested positive for COVID-19.

Ottawa Public Health announced the city's first confirmed case of COVID-19 on Wednesday. A man in his 40s, who'd recently travelled to Austria on vacation, tested positive for the virus after developing mild symptoms. Health officials said the man was conscientious about self-isolating at home, where he remained.

In a statement to 1310 NEWS, Ciena confirmed that one of its employees had tested positive for the coronavirus. In response, the company temporarily closed its campus on Terry Fox Drive until March 17, approximately 14 days after the last date when the infected employee was in the office.

Ciena has directed its employees to work remotely until the 14-day period elapses.
