Citizen transit commissioner reacts to claims about her during LRT public inquiry

By CityNews Ottawa

Citizen transit commissioner Sarah Wright-Gilbert is reacting after Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson was “highly critical” of her during his testimony at the Ottawa Light Rail Transit Public Inquiry into the city's light rail transit (LRT) system on June 30.

Wright-Gilbert told The Sam Laprade Show on Monday, July 4 that the mayor claimed that she was undermining OC Transpo after receiving the role of citizen transit commissioner while sending out false information on Twitter.

“The reason for citizen transit commissioner is so they can bring their perspective and their experience as an insight to transit users,” she said. “That's exactly what I was doing, and they were trying to come up with a way to remove me.”

Wright-Gilbert said the claim that she had been “attacking” City staff over social media came from a very active imagination, adding that while she had been critical of OC Transpo as a public institution, she never made a single tweet that could be interpreted as an attack.

She said it's hard to hear the mayor of Ottawa allege these claims against her which she said are untrue.

“There's a big different between attacking staff and criticizing a public institution that is OC Transpo,” she added.
