A new helmet policy is coming into effect at City of Ottawa-owned indoor skating rinks.
Starting this Saturday, children under the age of 10 will be required to wear a Canadian Standards Association-approved hockey helmet to skate on city-owned indoor rinks.
Under the old city policy, kids were permitted on the ice as long as they were wearing any helmet.
Program Coordinator at the City of Ottawa Kelly Bean says the new policy does carry over some of the old rules with one significant change.
“Effective February 1, all children under age 10 must wear a CSA-certified hockey helmet,” she explains. “We're actually defining the type of helmet that we recommend be used on the ice.”
The city is also recommending that the helmets have faceguards to protect kids' faces during falls.
The policy also applies to those over the age of 10 who are in a “learn to skate” or hockey program with the city.
