City of Ottawa spring operations kicking into gear

By Mike Vlasveld

Ottawa's Public Works and Environmental Services Department is getting spring operations underway.

That includes crews working to improve spring road conditions by patching potholes. They will also start grading gravel roads as soon as weather and local conditions permit.

Potential flooding is expected to be mitigated by opening ditches, culverts and catch basins where needed.

Staff will also start road and sidewalk sweeping, asphalt and concrete repairs and grass cutting along rural roadsides. Spring and summer lawn reinstatement will begin in areas damaged by winter operations equipment. Residents aware of locations in need of repair should report them online as soon as possible. Potholes may also be reported online.

Spring park maintenance activities were supposed to start in mid-April, weather permitting. That includes the removal of rink boards and temporary lights, the re-installation of seasonal furniture like benches, picnic tables and waste receptacles, as well as litter clean-up and preparation of the sports fields and ball diamonds for permitted use.

The city's spring tree planting begins next week and runs until mid June, weather permitting.

And as the temperature hits 10 C Sunday according to Environment Canada, the city is reminding residents in flood risk areas to take necessary precautions. If residents do not have a backwater valve or other protective plumbing device in their home and are interested in having one installed, the City of Ottawa's Residential Protective Plumbing Program offers a rebate.
