Ottawa city council approved a motion on Wednesday, Jan. 26 to place plaques on streets in front of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Ottawa in honour of a young Iranian woman who was murdered.

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old, was killed by Iran's “morality police” last September for not properly wearing her compulsory hijab.

Her death sparked protests across the globe, bringing light on what is happening in Iran.

Council approved a motion put forward by Bay Coun. Theresa Kavanagh to put Mahsa Amini plaques at the intersections along Metcalfe Street between Somerset Street West and MacLaren Street.

“There are Iranian citizens here in Ottawa who are fighting for the people back home,” said Coun.Kavanagh on The Sam Laprade Show on Jan. 26. “I just felt it was good to do some king of gesture to show our solidarity with the men and women of Iran who have worked so hard to bring what's happening in their country to our attention.”

The street signs will be installed for at least one year and then the City of Ottawa will conduct a review, said Coun. Kavanagh.

“I think it is health for us to look at what's going on in the world,” she added. “It reminds people what happened. We are not talking about history, we are talking about what's going on in the world right now.”
