Constance Bay full of volunteers, but more needed in other areas

By Mike Vlasveld

Volunteers showing up in Constance Bay are being redirected to other areas of the city, as hundreds have shown up at the local community centre.

Meanwhile, city officials are calling for more help in Britannia and Cumberland.

The City of Ottawa has extended sandbagging hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The number one priority is to fill sandbags and support homeowners along the Ottawa River in danger of flooding.

The check-in locations:

  • Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Centre, 262 Len Purcell Drive (9 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
  • Cumberland Heritage Village Museum, 2940 Old Montreal Road. A shuttle will transport volunteers from the museum to the site and back. (9 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
  • Royal Canadian Legion at 377 Albirch Road (9 a.m. to 7 p.m.)

Volunteers are asked to prepare accordingly and be dressed appropriately. It's also recommended that volunteers check the weather forecast as temperatures and conditions are expected to vary.

Meals will be provided to all volunteers, however, if someone has a food allergy or special dietary requirement, it is recommended that they bring their own food or snacks.

More volunteer info can be found on Gatineau and Ottawa city websites.
