Getting across the Elgin Street Renewal project is about to get a little more complicated.
The crossing at Somerset Street will be closing to traffic on July 2, for 13 weeks, in order to get underground utility work and intersection reconstruction done.
While Somerset Street is closed at Elgin Street, Cooper Street will open to route eastbound traffic and MacLaren Street will open to route westbound traffic across Elgin Street.
Access to local properties on Somerset Street will continue throughout the closure period, via Metcalfe Street and Cartier Street.
The city says Cooper Street will temporarily revert to its original traffic pattern — one-way eastbound from Metcalfe Street to Cartier Street.
MacLaren Street will also temporarily revert to its original traffic pattern — one-way westbound from Elgin Street to Metcalfe Street, and two-way from Cartier Street to Elgin Street.
OC Transpo routes 5 and 14 will be detoured to use Cooper Street and MacLaren Street. Bus stop locations will also need to be relocated as part of the Somerset Street closure. They can be found on the revised transit detour map and on octranspo.com.
Pedestrian crossings will be maintained around the closure area and signed detours will be in place as needed.
The renewal project's webpage features up-to-date traffic, transit and cyclist detour maps.
Construction is underway for the renewal of Elgin Street from Gloucester Street to Isabella Street. It also includes some underground work on Waverley Street from Elgin Street to Metcalfe Street, through Jack Purcell Park.
Pedestrian access to businesses will remain open at all times and residents and visitors are encouraged to continue to support Elgin area businesses during construction.
