Firefighters knock down Orléans garage fire before it could spread

By Alex Black

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) contained a garage fire in Orléans on Tuesday before it could spread.

Around 11:45 a.m., firefighters responded to an end unit townhome in the 300 block of Rolling Meadow Crescent, off of Knotridge Street and Esterbrook Drive, following 9-1-1 calls reporting a fire inside the garage.

A working fire was declared while crews were on route to the scene because black smoke could be seen from a distance. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed the garage was fully engulfed in smoke and flames and a fast attack was immediately initiated.

Firefighters made their way inside the home and began searching through the heavy smoke conditions to make sure there was no one inside and it was determined the home was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

An OFS heavy rescue truck with a winch had to be used to pull a vehicle out of the garage onto the driveway when the gas tank caught fire. The gas meter for the home, located inside the wall between the garage and front porch, also caught fire and began to leak. Once the fire was extinguished, Enbridge shut the gas off.

The fire was under control by 12:25 p.m. and contained to the garage.

The home was ventilated of residual smoke and a fire watch system was put in place to monitor for any hot spots or flare ups.

There were no injuries reported and victim assistance was requested for two adults.

A fire investigator was dispatched to the scene to determine the cause and origin of the blaze.
