Five people, all in their 20s, died following a crash on Highway 401 just west of Belleville, Ont., early Saturday morning.

The Ontario Provincial Police say the collision involving a tractor trailer and passenger van also sent two passengers to hospital with serious injuries.

The OPP say the crash happened around 3:45 a.m. in Quinte West, Ont., between Belleville and Trenton.

The deceased were identified as Harpreet Singh, 24, Jaspinder Singh, 21, Karanpal Singh, 22, Mohit Chouhan, 23 and Pawan Kumar, 23.

All five were students from India, according to an OPP update issued on Sunday, March 13. They were studying in Montreal and the Greater Toronto Area.

They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver was the lone occupant of that vehicle and was uninjured.

No charges have been laid.

A stretch of highway closed for about 10 hours on Saturday as police investigated.

The roads have since reopened.
