Ottawa Fire crews tackle large haystack fire in city’s rural south end

By CityNews Ottawa

The Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) tackled a large haystack fire in the city's rural south end early Sunday morning.

Firefighters said they received a call at approximately 5:48 a.m., after there was a haystack fire on Franktown Road off of Joys Road, near the Munster area.

At 6 a.m., approximately 100 round straw bails caught on fire, which were 5 feet by 5 feet in length.

Fire crews managed to extinguish the fire, preventing it from spreading to a nearby tree line. The fire was declared under control at 6:21 a.m.

The fire, crews said, took place in an area with no access to fire hydrants and therefore firefighters used tanker trucks to shuttle in water from a hydrant in a new sub-division on Noriker Court and an excavator was brought in to help pull the hay bails apart to extinguish the hot spots.

No one was injured.
