Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital emergency department seeing severe pressures due to COVID-19

By Chris Kurys

The emergency department at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital is facing severe pressures, and the hospital's chief executive officer (CEO) is blaming the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

“We're seeing a significant spike in the occurrence of illness due to COVID-19 in our patient population,” explained Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital CEO and president Michael Cohen.

He tells Wake Up With Rob Snow on Oct. 20 that the effects of the pandemic continue to impact inpatient and outpatient units.

Cohen said staffing levels are stable but fragile, and there's a lack of available beds in the community.

“So it's a double whammy, we have pressure with increased acuity and illness and volume coming through our emergency doors and a hampered ability to get people out to place them appropriately,” he said.
