Police chief asks OPP to investigate leaked audio recordings

By Jason White

Ottawa's police chief has asked the OPP to investigate a series of audio recordings posted publicly online, that centre on the head of the police services board and the president of the police union.

The recordings were posted over the past couple of weeks. In them, a man's voice is heard talking about things like an undercover investigation involving a murder suspect, and unsubstantiated claims involving Councillor Eli El-Chantiry — the chair of the Ottawa Police Services Board.

Before last night's police services board meeting, the police chief read a statement that his service has not and is not conducting an investigation involving Councillor El-Chantiry.

The description of the audio recordings claimed that that the voice they contain is Matt Skof, the president of the Ottawa Police Association. Skof has denied his voice is the one in the recordings.

Skof declined to comment to 1310 NEWS, other than to describe the current situation as, “sad and manipulative,” and to call it unfair for Councillor El-Chantiry to be attached to it.

Chief Bordeleau has asked the OPP to investigate the origin of the recordings and the individuals involved, saying an outside police force will ensure transparency and impartiality.
